Safe Haven...

A safe haven is an interesting place to be safe.  These places consist of usually a dirt lot, in the middle of nowhere, with a high fence around it and locked gate. Sometimes there is a porta potty and a trash can, but others, there is nothing. Our safe haven for the weekend had a very clean porta potty and heat!  We were by ourselves which meant great times with Texas as she could play ball first thing in the morning while it was cool, and in the evening when it cooled off before Bob came to bed. Texas is no dummy and she knows shade. She always wants to be with us and when we would visit the porta potty. She would jump out of the truck, stay in the shade of the truck till we started towards the porta potty, then she would run and stand in that shade provided by the only other thing tall enough. These actions would be reversed when we headed back to the truck. Early Monday morning, while it was still very dark, we left our safe haven and traveled to southern California where the weather was perfect!

Yes, we can help

Our youngest daughter, her husband, and our granddaughter, were moving from San Antonio, TX to Tucson, AZ and our timing was perfect to help them. We traveled over to Tucson after making a reservation in The Mission View RV park for our truck to be plugged in to give the generator a break.

We were at their new house when the moving truck arrived to help them get settled. I had the hard task of playing with Paige while everyone unloaded boxes and got them into the correct rooms. I enjoyed every minute with our granddaughter. Brandy and Grant were moving from a larger house to a smaller one and it was sort of comical to watch as they struggled to figure out where everything was going to fit. Since this was the week of July 4th, we decided to stay and attend the fireworks in Sierra Vista, AZ with my best friend from high school. The fireworks were spectacular and we could enjoy them as we knew our truck was safe in the RV park plugged in and keeping our pets cool and comfortable.

Pre-Planned

We had a load picking up first thing Monday morning heading towards the center of the country and then picking up another load and continuing to Alabama.  After delivering in Alabama, we did not have a load and the closest truck stop was the TA in Montgomery, AL. This is by far our least favorite truck stop, but we did not figure we would stay long. First things first, and after we had our shower, we decided to have breakfast. As we turned the corner to go into the restaurant, another driver that we know surprised us and we ended up having a very pleasant breakfast with her and her husband. We really enjoy these surprise encounters and having time to catch up with friends. After breakfast, Bob went back to the truck to take a nap and I went out on the patio to work on the computer, and sure enough as I just got settled in, the phone rang with another load. This load was going in the WRONG direction as it was going to southern Texas and we need to be in Lexington, KY on Wednesday, but for this agent, if we can make something work we will.

Surprise, Surprise

On our way to Texas, I contacted a couple agents letting them know that we were looking for a load that would get us nearer to Lexington, KY by Wednesday. Sure enough, an agent came through with a load picking up on Monday going to South Carolina delivering on Tuesday.  PERFECT!  The even better part was that this will allow us to spend another weekend with our truck plugged into an RV park, while we work on cleaning up the truck and getting our weekly chores done.  This campground also has a nice dog park that I think Texas will really enjoy.

Expedite Expo 2018

The Expedite Expo will be held in Lexington, KY July 20th & 21st at the Lexington Center. This will be our 15th Expo to attend. We will be hosting one of the workshops with another couple. Our workshop is “Behind the Scenes with Successful Teams” and then we will be moderators at a couple of round tables. Freightliner Team Run Smart will have a booth at the Expo and is hosting Casino Night this year. Also exhibiting will be Onspot Automatic Chains as there are many expediter trucks that have the Onspot chains and just as many wanting to learn more about them. Onspot has one of the best exhibits as they have an enclosed box with a tire and Onspot chain that shows exactly what happens once the chains are engaged.

Review

As always, in our way of making a living there is never a dull moment. Luck was with us to get a load going to Arizona where we could help our kids get settled into their new home and we could attend the fireworks in Sierra Vista with friends. Our work continues on our new truck and sleeper and I hope before the year is out I will be writing from within our 2019 Freightliner Cascadia with an ARI sleeper. The Expedite Expo is how we got started as Expediters in 2004 and has been near and dear to our hearts since then. So many people took the time to answer our questions and help us on our journey to be successful and we can never give back enough.  Not only are we still learning as we attend the expo, we make new friends and renew old friendships. It is the highlight of the year for us.

Wishing you safe travels. Till next time,

       Bob & Linda.
